Meroddi Galata Mansion: Living in History Right by Galata

If you love modern glass hotels where every floor looks exactly the same, there is plenty of choice in Istanbul.

Our experience at the Meroddi Galata Mansion: a historic house, great breakfast, a small balcony and the Galata Tower only a few steps away.

The Meroddi Galata Mansion is something different. You walk in and immediately have this feeling: There is history here.

Wood. Stairs. High rooms. An old building. And for me there was really this: “As if I had got stuck somewhere in 1918.” 😂

The Building: Actually Historic

The current Meroddi site describes the Galata Mansion as a historic townhouse from the late 19th century.

It is on Serdar-ı Ekrem Caddesi – a street where some of the best-known historic residential buildings of Galata stand. The house was restored, but historic elements such as bay windows and high ceilings were deliberately preserved.

And that is exactly what you feel.

Our Room: Double Room with a Small Balcony

There were four of us. And unfortunately there was no shared four-bed room for us during our stay. That's why we had double rooms.

Our room had a small balcony onto the street. And I found it beautiful.

For Four People You Should Look Carefully Beforehand

If you travel as four or with several people, check exactly which room combination is available. During our stay we couldn't simply book one large room for four.

For couples? Of course no problem at all.

The Wooden Staircase – Why I Still Have It in My Head

It sounds crazy. But this beautiful old wooden staircase really stuck in my memory. You go up. You go down. And every time it simply fits this house.

In some hotels an old wooden staircase would perhaps mean: “Please renovate urgently.” Here it means: character. 😂

The Breakfast Was Really Strong

The breakfast was a highlight for us. Not simply big for the sake of being big. But high quality. Beautiful. Special.

The current Meroddi site still confirms an open breakfast buffet for guests.

Lattas Cafe Bistro Right in the House

Today Meroddi runs the Lattas Cafe Bistro on the ground floor of the Galata Mansion. There is coffee, breakfast, brunch, desserts and smaller dishes.

Galata Tower: Really Almost on the Doorstep

That is one of the biggest plus points. You leave the hotel. A few steps. And there is Galata. The Galata Tower is only a few minutes' walk away.

Şişhane Metro and İstiklal

The metro is also quickly reached. And you reach İstiklal in a few minutes too.

And Again My Galata Tip: Tünel!

If you go down towards Karaköy, everything is wonderful. Downhill. Easy. Beautiful.

If you have to come back up in the evening? Then Istanbul reminds you that Galata isn't flat. 😂

So: use the Tünel. Ride up. Then only a few more minutes towards the hotel.

Who Is Meroddi Galata Mansion Right For?

  • like historic houses
  • love Galata
  • don't want to sleep in a completely interchangeable hotel
  • value atmosphere
  • want a good breakfast in the morning
  • and want to stay very centrally

Who Perhaps Less?

If you are looking exclusively for ultra-modern, minimalist hotels, I would rather look at the Continental.

If, with four or more people, you absolutely need a single large room, check the current availability very carefully beforehand.

Not sure yet whether the area suits you? Which neighbourhood in Istanbul suits your trip?

Would I Book Again?

Yes. Especially as a couple I would immediately consider it again. The house has character. And modern hotels often have far too little of that.
