After my husband himself had an eye laser treatment in Istanbul, I know one thing above all: price alone would never be enough for me to choose a clinic.

Planning eye laser surgery in Istanbul: which costs to compare, which questions to ask the clinic, and what to watch for with the exam, aftercare, hotel and transfer.
Yes, our price difference back then between Istanbul and Austria was enormous. But with eyes, I don't want to win the cheapest offer. I want to know who examines you, which method is recommended and why, and what happens if something doesn't go according to plan.
How much does eye laser surgery in Istanbul cost?
Our personal historical figure back then was about 1,200 euros for both eyes. A comparable offer in Austria at the time was around 3,800 euros.
Please don't use these numbers as a current price guide. Procedure, clinic, doctor, diagnostics and scope of service can change prices a lot.
- A low price can be attractive. But with eyes, it's not the prettiest package deal that decides – it's medical suitability, the doctor, diagnostics, disclosure and aftercare.
Pre-examination: the most important red line for me
With my husband, an examination happened before the procedure and only then did things continue. That's exactly what I'd expect again. Eye laser surgery isn't a service you choose based on Instagram photos alone. If a clinic practically promises which method is "perfect" before real diagnostics, I'd become very cautious.
- A beautiful clinic is no substitute for medical disclosure. Look for professional information, qualifications, real diagnostics and clear aftercare processes.
Hotel and stay after the procedure
Our large apartment turned out to be worth gold. My husband could withdraw into his own room and rest his eyes. So I wouldn't only pay attention to "close to the clinic," but also to quiet, the ability to darken the room, an elevator and a pleasant place to retreat to. A party street right below the window is maybe not the most glamorous idea in this specific case.
Transfer and language support
We were picked up from the hotel back then. That made the whole process much more relaxed. After a procedure, I don't want to start piecing together a route with my phone and public transport. I'd clarify in advance whether transfer is included, whether companions can come along, and who is reachable in case of delays.
Our coordinator spoke fluent German. Especially with medical topics that's enormously reassuring, because you want to ask questions and really understand the answers.
Why, despite our positive experience, I still don't just write "book this clinic"
Precisely because it went well for my husband, I want to treat this topic seriously. A good personal experience is valuable – but it doesn't replace an individual medical suitability check. I can tell you what happened to us. I can show you which questions I'd ask today. But I can't promise you that your eye, your cornea and your medical situation will react the same way.
How to check an eye laser clinic before a trip to Istanbul
For medical trips I'd check much more strictly than for a hotel or restaurant. The clinic isn't just selling comfort – it's treating your eyes.
1. Who is the treating doctor?
Name, professional qualification, experience, and who actually performs the surgery. Not just a brand name or "our team."
2. What diagnostics happen before the surgery?
A serious clinic must examine first and decide afterward. If a method is already guaranteed before diagnostics, that would be a warning sign for me.
3. Why is exactly this method recommended?
Have it explained why LASIK, PRK, SMILE or another method fits your findings – and what alternatives exist.
4. What's included in the price?
Clarify in writing:
- pre-examination
- surgery
- medication/drops
- check-ups
- transfer
- translation
- any follow-up treatment
- what happens with complications
5. Aftercare after returning home
One of the most important points in medical tourism. Who takes responsibility if problems arise two weeks later? Are there findings reports in English/German? Can your eye doctor at home understand what was done?
6. Reachability in an emergency
A 24/7 number or a clear medical contact person, not just a sales WhatsApp chat.
7. Consent and risk disclosure
You should understand risks, alternatives and realistic expectations. Simply signing a document because the transfer is waiting wouldn't be an option for me.
8. Hygiene and clinic structure
Don't just look at the lobby and Instagram. What matters are medical standards, diagnostics and documented procedures.
9. Reading reviews correctly
Not just stars. Specifically look for aftercare, complication management, communication and long-term experiences. A lot of identical-sounding short reviews make me more skeptical, not less.
10. Planning accommodation
After an eye treatment, a quiet apartment/hotel can matter more than a rooftop and nightlife. Short distances, a room that can be darkened, an elevator and an easy ride to the check-up are practical.
11. A companion
I was glad we were there as a family. After a treatment I don't want to navigate an unfamiliar city alone. Whether a companion is medically necessary is something the clinic clarifies – practically, one can help enormously.
12. Don't just compare the price
Our difference between Istanbul and Austria was big back then. Still, I would never choose eye surgery based on "cheapest price wins." Quality, suitability and aftercare matter more.
My detailed questions for an eye clinic
- 1. Which method do you specifically recommend to me, and why?
- 2. What alternatives exist for my findings?
- 3. Which examinations decide whether I'm even suitable?
- 4. Who performs the procedure, and what professional qualification/experience does the doctor have?
- 5. What risks and common side effects apply to my findings?
- 6. What's included in the total price and what isn't?
- 7. What medications are planned?
- 8. When does the first follow-up check take place?
- 9. How many days should I stay in Istanbul?
- 10. Which activities, screen time, sport, swimming, make-up etc. are allowed again, and when?
- 11. What do I do if I have pain or worsening vision after returning home?
- 12. Is there a reachable medical contact point?
- 13. What documents do I get for my eye doctor at home?
- 14. What does any necessary follow-up treatment cost?
Warning signs that would personally make me back off
- Pressure to pay immediately or secure an appointment.
- Guarantees of a perfect result without an examination.
- Unclear who the operating doctor is.
- No understandable risk disclosure.
- No clear aftercare.
- Only social media testimonials instead of verifiable medical information.
- Price keeps changing or services are unclear.
- No written documentation.
My short checklist before booking
- Really compare at least two or three offers.
- Compare not just the total price, but the scope of services.
- Verifiably check the doctor and clinic.
- Put the pre-examination and suitability at the center.
- Clarify aftercare at home.
- Plan enough time in Istanbul.
- Organize a quiet hotel/apartment.
- Plan transfer and a companion.
- Save/print all documents.
My conclusion
For my husband, the experience was very positive. Precisely because of that, I don't want to treat this topic lightly. The price can be interesting – but with eyes I'd first look at suitability, method, doctor, diagnostics and aftercare.
